Research
I am interested in the ways semiotic, especially linguistic, ideologies mediate our social realities.
I take ethnographic and critical approaches to my research. In my dissertation project, I work with Spanish and Haitian Creole-speaking communities in the Dominican Republic to investigate how language is implicated in processes of racialization.
I also analyze discourse online, in popular culture, and in politics. I have analyzed conversations about the recent linguistic innovations Latinx/e, as well as the role of raciosemiotics in comedic performances.
